"THIS CERTIFIES THAT Mr. Cyrus Hurlbut and Miss Mary A. Terry, both of Pa were by me United in Marriage according to the Law of God and of the State of Pennsylvania at the residence of the bride's father in Terry-town Bradford Co., Pa on the 18th day of Feb 1861.
Elder A. P.Swael"
Taken from a photocopy of the certificate in my possession from the Hurlbut collection of genealogy prepared by Francis D. Hurlbut, Sr. and Terry Allison Hurlbut, Sr. in 1964.
Large leather bound Bible (published in 1835) which was apparently the property of 1st Martin, then Cyrus Hurlbut.
On the 13 May 1882, Mary Ann Hurlbut bought her house from Orrison and Lucy Hibbard and her brother William Terry and his wife, Mary Hibbard Terry, for seven hundred dollars.
Mary Ann died at the young age of 44, leaving her loving husband, Cyrus and 7 of her 8 children to grieve her loss. Her son, Frank E Hurlbut, passed away at 18 yrs of age in 1881. When Mary died, she died intestate and this home had to be sold to pay off a lien of $200.00 owed. Mary's son, Manly Terry cleared the lien and settled her debt.
On the 25th of August Cyrus penned a beautiful poem entitled, "To Mary," provided to me by one of his ggdaughters...a portion which is reprinted here....
"'Tis hard to make it seem, Mary,
That so many years have been
Since first I saw your bonny face
And sought your love to win;
Since I heard you speak the welcome word
That bound the mystic tie; -
With the roses blooming on your cheek,
And the love light in my eye...."
